Thomas Calder is a journalist and fiction writer based in Asheville, North Carolina, where he serves as managing editor of Mountain Xpress, the city’s alternative weekly. For Mountain Xpress he has long written the “Asheville Archives” column, a recurring local history series that revisits people, institutions, and events from the region’s past. His Mondial contribution, “Asheville Archives: United World Federalists Formed in Asheville, 1947,” originated as one of those columns and recounts the 1947 founding of the United World Federalists in Asheville, which is why it was reprinted for a world federalist readership. Calder earned his MFA in creative writing from the University of Houston. He is the author of the novel The Wind Under the Door, and his fiction, book reviews, and author conversations have appeared in literary outlets including Juked, West Branch, and storySouth. His short fiction was a semifinalist for the 2025 Doris Betts Fiction Prize, and his forthcoming novel, The Crave, was a finalist for the 2025 Santa Fe Writers Project Literary Award. Originally from South Florida, he lives in Asheville.
