Meet Anthropic’s Claude Mythos

Last week, AI company Anthropic unveiled Claude Mythos Preview its most capable artificial intelligence model to date. Unlike previous frontier models, however, Mythos is not being released to the public. Instead, Anthropic has limited access to a small group of trusted cybersecurity organizations through Project Glasswing, citing concerns that the model’s extraordinary capabilities could be misused if broadly available.

What makes Mythos different?

According to Anthropic, the model demonstrates unprecedented ability to identify complex software vulnerabilities, reason through sophisticated code bases, and discover security flaws that have previously gone undetected. Early evaluations suggest it can solve advanced cybersecurity challenges at a level beyond previous AI systems, making it one of the most powerful AI models ever developed for defensive cyber research.

That is both exciting and concerning.

Every advance in cybersecurity has an offensive counterpart. A model capable of helping defenders secure critical infrastructure could also help malicious actors discover vulnerabilities faster than ever before. Recognizing this dual use risk, Anthropic chose to withhold public access while partnering with governments, research institutions and cybersecurity experts to strengthen digital defences before the technology becomes more widely available.

The announcement marks an important milestone in the evolution of artificial intelligence. For the first time, an AI developer has concluded that a model’s cyber capabilities warrant a controlled rollout rather than an open release. It also signals that frontier AI is increasingly being viewed not merely as a commercial technology, but as critical infrastructure with implications for national and international security.

For world federalists, Claude Mythos raises broader questions about global governance. Cyber threats do not respect national borders and neither will increasingly capable AI systems. As these technologies continue to evolve, effective international cooperation, common standards, and responsible oversight will be essential to ensure that AI strengthens global security rather than undermines it.

The challenge ahead is not simply building more powerful AI it is building the institutions capable of governing it wisely.
