The Responsibility to Protect: From Promise to Practice by Bellamy and Luck

Bellamy, director of the Asia Pacific Centre for R2P, and Luck, former UN Special Adviser on R2P, recommend combining short-term emergency policies with longer-term structural reforms to close that gap.

Anthropocene by Edward Burtynsky

R2P Update: UN SC side event and MENA trainings emphasize prevention
The International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect and partners convened a UN Security Council side event in October 2018 on women's roles in atrocity and conflict prevention, producing concrete action points ahead of the 2019 UN Commission on the Status of Women meetings. The ICRtoP also conducted Responsibility to Protect training sessions in Beirut in December 2018, in partnership with the Permanent Peace Movement, to strengthen civil society capacity in the MENA region.

In Memoriam: John Sutter
John Sutter, who died in March 2019 at age 93, spent decades after a career in the U.S. Foreign Service and The Asia Foundation promoting democratic international institutions through the World Federalist Association, Democratic World Federalists, and the World Federalist Movement. He was the driving force behind world federalist newsletters in Northern California and a key organizer of the 1995 WFM World Congress in San Francisco, held to mark the 50th anniversary of the UN Charter.

In Memoriam: Takeshi Akune
Takeshi Akune, Secretary General of the World Federalist Movement of Japan from the 1990s, died in January in Sakai, Osaka, having spent his career advocating for the International Criminal Court, a UN Parliamentary Assembly, and nuclear disarmament. His final public campaign was a petition calling on President Trump to halt land reclamation at Oura Bay in Okinawa, which gathered over 210,000 signatures.
