Clara Subirachs is a global democracy advocate who served as a volunteer coordinator at Democracia Global (Global Democracy), a civil society organization that promotes democratic global governance and a more representative United Nations. Democracia Global sits on the steering committee of the international Campaign for a UN Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA), working alongside Democracy Without Borders, the World Federalist Movement, Institute for Global Policy, the Society for Threatened Peoples International, and The Workable World Trust. In that role, Subirachs helped run the organization’s education and outreach work in Latin America, including its UNPA campaign and its COPLA campaign for a Latin American and Caribbean criminal court against transnational organized crime. She coordinated and presented Model UN Parliamentary Assembly simulations, working with universities such as the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires to test the model with students and to introduce young people to the idea of directly elected representation at the global level. Her Mondial contribution, written with Democracia Global colleague Emilia Ismael, reports on one of these Model UN Parliamentary Assembly exercises, connecting youth education, UN reform, and climate and environmental concerns. Through this work she has focused on civic participation, youth engagement, and proposals to give citizens, not only states, a voice in international institutions.
