Augusto Lopez-Claros is an international economist and the Executive Director of the Global Governance Forum, where he leads efforts to modernize global governance institutions and has spearheaded the drafting of a proposed Second United Nations Charter. He brings more than 30 years of experience in international organizations. Between 2011 and 2017 he served as director of the Global Indicators Group at the World Bank, part of the Bank’s research Vice Presidency. Earlier he was chief economist and director of the Global Competitiveness Program at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, where he edited the Global Competitiveness Report, the Forum’s flagship publication. He also worked for several years in the financial sector in London with a focus on emerging markets, and he served as the International Monetary Fund’s Resident Representative in Russia during the 1990s. During 2018 and 2019 he was a Senior Fellow at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Educated in England and the United States, he holds a diploma in Mathematical Statistics from Cambridge University and a PhD in Economics from Duke University. His books include Equality for Women = Prosperity for All (St. Martin’s Press, 2018), Global Governance and the Emergence of Global Institutions for the 21st Century (Cambridge University Press, 2020, with Arthur Dahl and Maja Groff), and Global Governance and International Cooperation: Managing Global Catastrophic Risks in the 21st Century (Routledge, 2024, coedited with Richard Falk). In 2018 the Global Challenges Foundation awarded him its New Shape Prize, and in 2020 he received the ClosinGap Award in Spain.
