Jane Shevtsov is a systems ecologist who teaches mathematics and statistics for life science students in the Department of Life Sciences Core Education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She earned a Bachelor of Science in ecology, behavior, and evolution at UCLA and a PhD in ecology at the University of Georgia in 2012, where her dissertation examined the analysis and mathematical simulation of ecological networks such as food webs. Since then she has focused on teaching and on curriculum development in mathematics for the life sciences, helping build UCLA’s quantitative biology course sequence. She co-authored the textbook Modeling Life: The Mathematics of Biological Systems (Springer, 2017) with Alan Garfinkel and Yina Guo. She has also worked on life support systems for space habitats, both as a student intern at NASA and, more recently, in collaboration with the private space industry.
A world federalist since age 18, Shevtsov has been involved with Citizens for Global Solutions (CGS) for much of that time and serves on the board of the CGS Education Fund. Writing for the general public, she has authored and co-authored articles on global government, world citizenship, climate and environmental governance, and the control of nuclear weapons, including work co-written with Tad Daley. She is a cofounder of the website World Beyond Borders. Her writing on these themes has appeared in outlets such as Mondial, the journal of CGS and World Federalist Movement – Canada.
