Dr. Sylvie Lemieux is a Canadian peace and nuclear disarmament advocate. She is a retired Lieutenant-Colonel army engineer who served across Canada with the Canadian Armed Forces (including as Ontario Area Engineer and Garrison Commander) and a retired executive of the Public Service of Canada. Earlier in her career she took part in a UN humanitarian mission in Pakistan, teaching mine awareness in support of the repatriation of Afghans. After her military and public-service career she completed a Master’s degree in Globalization and International Development at the University of Ottawa and a Doctorate in Conflict Studies at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, with a thesis examining the negotiation of global treaties through the lens of the Ottawa Treaty on landmines. From March 2021 she served, jointly with Robin Collins, as Co-Chair of the Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (CNANW), where their work included promoting a proposed Peace Table for Ukraine and Russia and convening roundtables that produced recommendations to the Government of Canada. She remains an active member of CNANW’s Steering Committee and serves on the boards of the Group of 78, the Canadian Peace Research Association (CPRA), and the International Peace Bureau (IPB). She is also a member of the Canadian Pugwash Group. Her advocacy centres on sustainable peace, social justice, the environment, and the abolition of nuclear weapons.
