Canada’s Human Rights Commitments

Originally published by World Federalist Movement – Canada · April 2019

Originally launched in 2015 with former WFMC President, the late Warren Allmand, the Project on Canada’s Human Rights Commitments is a web-based educational resource, a database of Canada’s international commitments regarding the major international human rights and humanitarian law treaties and other instruments. The website offers Canadians an accessible, all-in-one-place presentation, in English and French, of the body of international human rights and humanitarian instruments, as well as up to date information regarding the extent of Canadian participation respecting these instruments.New treaty summaries have recently been added in English. French versions will be available soon. To be informed when these and other changes are made, sign up for occasional email updates.

The recently added summaries of treaties and other instruments include:

  • Abolition of Forced Labour Convention
  • Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness
  • Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons
  • Declaration on the Rights of Disabled Persons
  • Geneva Conventions
  • Inter-American Convention to Prevent and Punish Torture
  • UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity
  • Vienna Declaration

On December 10th 2018, there was a webinar discussing Canada’s human rights commitments in general and this project in particular with Senator Marilou McPhedran. It is available to watch here.
