David C. Oughton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theological Studies at Saint Louis University, where he teaches Religions of the World. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophies and Theologies of Peace and Justice from Saint Louis University in 1998, an interdisciplinary doctorate spanning comparative religion, ethics, and peace and justice studies. Over a career of more than three decades, he has taught over 400 courses in philosophy, comparative religions, peace studies, world federalism, and Holocaust and genocide studies at schools across the St. Louis area.
His areas of expertise include the world’s religions, interreligious dialogue, peace studies, and Holocaust and genocide studies. He co-authored a student text and teacher’s manual, Jewish-Christian Relations in Light of the Holocaust (2006, with Rabbi Robert Sternberg). He is also the author of the multi-part work Religious Support for Democratic World Federation, which surveys how major religious and ethical traditions provide a moral foundation for global governance under world law.
A longtime interfaith organizer, Oughton founded the St. Louis Dialogue Group of the World’s Religions and Philosophies and has served as president of the Interfaith Partnership of Greater St. Louis. He sits on the boards of the Citizens for Global Solutions Education Fund, the St. Louis Holocaust Museum (Holocaust Museum and Learning Center), and the Living Insights Center. His writing for Mondial argues that the world’s religions have a responsibility to build the ethical foundation, the Golden Rule, world citizenship, and stewardship of creation, on which a democratic world federation can be established.
