Current events at the International Criminal Court

Last week, an agreement was signed between the International Criminal Court and the government of Georgia to assist in the Court’s ongoing investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in South Ossetia, Georgia in 2008. While in Georgia for the signing, the registrar of the ICC, Herman von Hebel, also met with members of civil society concerning the investigation.

The Georgian investigation began in 2015 and is one of several begun in the last few years, including those concerning Colombia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, which push back against the allegation that the Court is exclusively interested in situations in Africa.

As mentioned in this month’s TakeAction, International Justice Day was June 17th. The Rome Statute, the ICC’s founding document, was adopted on July 17, 1998 and International Justice Day (IJD) marks this day and acts as a reminder of the importance of the ongoing fight against impunity and the urgent need to bring justice to victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. This year, the Coalition for the International Criminal Court produced a powerful video, #WarAfterWar, to mark the day
